About us

In prison, with little or no outside contact, people often feel hopeless and lonely and as though there is nothing for them. Through writing letters and visiting, New Bridge Foundation gives people in prison in England and Wales hope and optimism that there is a future. New Bridge Foundation befriending enables people to feel connected, providing them with a sense of identity and belonging, and in doing so helps them to reconnect with the world outside.

New Bridge befriending helps people to trust, sometimes for the first time, and in turn to become more trustworthy; it is non-judgmental and impartial, enabling people to be themselves, to learn and to better understand themselves.

New Bridge Foundation supports just under 300 volunteers to write to and visit around 550 people in prison across the UK by giving them intensive training and ongoing support through a network of monthly support groups in operation across England and Wales.

About the role

We are looking for a charismatic and engaging Chief Executive to lead our small but highly-dedicated and experienced team to move New Bridge Foundation to the next level so that it can facilitate friendships between even more volunteers and prisoners.

About you

The successful candidate will be responsible for creating a five-year sustainable strategy for the organisation and will then be expected to deliver the strategy with passion and commitment.

Previous experience in criminal justice is preferable but not essential, as is previous experience in a fundraising capacity. However, a proven track record developing and delivering strategies in a small organisation is essential. This experience should include demonstrable financial and people management skills, as well as working with a diverse range of stakeholders.

Equal opportunity, location and access

New Bridge is committed to equal employment opportunities regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, marital status, pregnancy, maternity, disability, or gender identity and welcomes applications from all sections of the community. However location is a practical constraint as our office is above an old church. There is a stone staircase of 25 steps to reach the office and no lift. The role will also require some travel to the 19 Volunteer Support Groups around England & Wales.

We also welcome applications from people who have served a prison sentence or have a family member or close friend in prison. Please tell us if you are in that category either in your application or during interview.
